Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a major health and safety risk for people working with power tools.  It is a legal requirement to manage the risks from noise and vibration exposure.  Employers neglecting this duty of care are finding themselves paying expensive compensation and legal costs.

The SCP Noise and Vibration Control Group (NVCG) is a specialist, purpose-built test facility which provides practical information and guidance to sites and Safety Managers.  Our aim is to make it easier for you to manage the risks from vibration and other related occupational hazards such as noise and dust.

Independent, expert advice

Our NVCG is an independent test facility made up of leading scientists and engineers in the field of vibration exposure assessment.  We offer practical guidance on how to manage the risks, backed by technical knowledge and expertise.

Risk Management testing

Practical, relevant risk management

Manufacturers are legally required to provide noise and vibration exposure information.  However this can be presented in many different ways, which can make it difficult or time consuming to work out how it actually affects you.  Added to this, vibration exposures can be very different depending on the tool and the task. Our expertise, combined with hands-on experience on site means that we provide informed guidance for the applications most relevant to you.

On Site Testing

Bespoke, hassle-free support

Where information is not already available, we are equipped to carry out manufacturer-independent, real-world tests of machines and consumables to assess their performance and the vibration exposure that they are likely to cause. Results are provided as practical guidance, arranged to fit in with your existing risk management systems.

In addition, we can advise you on alternative solutions enabling you to complete the job efficiently and economically.

On-site testing

We have specialist noise and vibration measurement systems developed in-house for assessing operator exposures in accordance with ISO 5349 and other appropriate standards. These systems are fully field-capable and are easily used to take real world measurements of specific or unusual exposures on-site.

The Dangers of Noise and Vibration

Exposure to hand-arm vibration can cause progressive and irreversible damage to the circulatory system, the nervous system and to joints and bones. These injuries are known collectively as Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS).

The most well known of these is ‘Vibration Induced White Finger’ (VWF).

Exposure to hand-arm vibration can also contribute to other injuries such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Early symptoms of HAVS

Tingling and numbness, causing discomfort and making it hard to sleep.

Fingers going white, then red and painful as the blood flow returns.

Loss of fine control, making it hard to pick up small objects or perform delicate tasks.

Loss of gripping strength, making it hard to lift and hold heavy objects.

Some simple ways to reduce
the risk

Check HAV information for your tools and tasks to make sure the risk of injury is low.

Use the right tool for the job.

Make sure your machine and consumables are in good condition.

Do not grip the tool too tightly or apply too much force.

Keep your hands warm and dry.

Massage your fingers during breaks.

Cut down on smoking (smoking reduces blood flow).
